| Scientific information, including medical knowledge, is not hard and fast. New information comes to light.
Theories shift. Advice changes. Hormone replacement therapy is no longer recommended for most post-menopausal women. Most stomach ulcers are now thought to be a result of a bacterium, not stress. A physiologist from Dartmouth has recently found no scientific evidence that healthy adults need to drink 8 or more glasses of water a day (see the May 6th New York Times science section). What next? A respected physical therapy instructor said that what she was teaching might be changed in another two or ten years. She said we simply do the best we can with the information we have. Doing the best we can with what we have is all we can do. |
